Best Frozen treats

Berry Berry Yogurt

At the forefront of Dallas' frozen yogurt trend is this Addison shop, where four rotating flavors of the mouth- tingling treat (from plain and chocolate to apricot-peach and green tea, some flavored with Splenda) are offered daily. A choice of more than two dozen toppings lets you go as healthy as you want.
KIM HARWELL / Special Contributor

4145 Belt Line Road, Addison. 972-991-6002. www.berryberryyogurt.com. Open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Curly's Frozen Custard

Staffers here will happily rattle off the difference between ice cream and frozen custard (the frozen custard appeal: Less whipped-in air plus smaller ice crystals equals smoother, denser product). Customers order at the window and then linger with their custards in the little parklike area. Beyond the always-available chocolate, vanilla and lite vanilla, July's special flavor is Spartan County peach. Oh, yes.

4017 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth. 817-763-8700. www.curlysfrozencustard.com. Open Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Double Dip Frozen Custard

This treat shop near old town Frisco has only two flavors: chocolate and vanilla. The menu, though, lists dozens of ways to gussy them up, including sundaes, shakes and caliches, which are blend-ins with more than 40 choices of nuts, candies, flavors and other ingredients, such as banana pudding. Seating features a partially enclosed patio.

Milwaukee Joe's Gourmet Ice Cream

Neither chocolate nor plain vanilla can be found in the case of 24 flavors at Milwaukee Joe's. There are intense ice cream flavors like lemon custard and cinnamon, as well as complicated confections like Almond Joy and Disco Lives, a turquoise ice cream that contains Nerds candies.

Locations in Bedford and Southlake. www.milwaukeejoes.com. Open Sunday-Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Hours vary slightly by location.)

Natsumi Gelato and Frozen Yogurt

This spot, in the new restaurant-heavy Shops on Henderson complex, offers frozen yogurt, gelato and sorbet, and it scores with all three. Two flavors of frozen yogurt are available daily: plain and another such as green tea. A glass case holds 16 flavors of gelatos and sorbets, ranging from the typical (Reese's peanut butter cup, dreamsicle) to the more exotic (lychee, ginger, avocado). The space is minimalist but cute.

2323 N. Henderson Ave. 214-823-1707. www.natsumiusa.com. Open Monday-Saturday noon to 11 p.m., Sunday noon to 10 p.m.

Old Town Creamery

The nostalgia-inducing smell of freshly baked waffle cones greeted us on a recent visit to this small but endearing shop. Old Town makes all its own ice cream, the flavors of which range from silky chocolate-coconut and cookie dough to cotton candy and a bright-tasting blueberry. Adventurers should note the "international flavors," such as almond- pistachio-saffron and fig.

6205 Coit Road, Plano. 972-673-0285. www.oldtowncreamery.com. Open Monday-Thursday noon to 10 p.m., Friday-Saturday noon to 11 p.m., Sunday 1 to 10 p.m.

OrangeCup

OrangeCup's sleek NorthPark setting (second floor, near Neiman Marcus and Barneys New York) is as chic and stylish as the posh shops that surround it. The yogurt shop has three flavors: Natural, with the pleasantly sour tang of plain yogurt; AcaiBerry, which also boasts blackberries and pomegranate; and the kicky Züm, a vitamin-enhanced variation with a blast of OJ for flavor. Toppings include organic nuts, granola and pristinely fresh fruit.

NorthPark Center, 8687 N. Central Expressway at Northwest Highway. 214-890-7710. www.myorangecup.com. Open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

Paciugo Gelato

It's been eight years since Ugo and Cristiana Ginatta left Turin, Italy, to open a gelato shop in Dallas. There are now more than two dozen locations throughout the U.S. and Mexico. The vast array of flavors has something to appeal to everyone, from Cookies 'n' Milk for the school-age set to Mediterranean Sea Salt Caramel for culinary sophisticates.

Locations in Dallas, Addison, Frisco and Plano. www.paciugo.com. Store at 5600 W. Lovers Lane open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Sunday noon to 10 p.m. (Location hours vary.)

Sorbeteria

If you are among those who would gladly eschew the richest chocolate ice cream for a balanced, bracing cup of lemon sorbet, Sorbeteria is your destination. This starkly modern shop across from NorthPark Center makes fruit sorbets for connoisseurs. Fun, compound flavors beyond the finely tuned basics include marion-blackberry, mango- raspberry and apricot-tangerine. Note to vegans: All the sorbets are 100 percent animal-free.
